The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is exerting a broad impact on the global economy through channels such as energy, trade, and international shipping. At the 9th World Investment Forum held in Doha, Qatar, United Nations officials noted that regional conflicts not only exacerbate the economic burden on developing nations, but their repercussions may also persist for years after the hostilities have ended.

The Strait of Hormuz serves as a vital artery for the global transport of energy and commodities. According to data from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), approximately one-quarter of the world’s seaborne oil trade and one-third of its seaborne fertilizer trade pass through this waterway. Since the beginning of this year, military conflicts in the Middle East and disruptions to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz have driven up international energy prices, maritime freight rates, and insurance costs—further affecting agricultural production, international trade, and global supply chains.

UNCTAD points out that some developing countries are highly dependent on imported energy and food. Rising prices not only increase production and operational costs for businesses but also place new strains on government finances and the livelihoods of the general population; the effects of these conflicts have even rippled out to countries well beyond the Middle East.
